This event is easily one of the most fun events all year, so you won’t want to miss out on all the action. Here’s everything you’ll need to know before you go.
What is the Siesta Key Crystal Classic?
The Siesta Key Crystal Classic is a one-of-a-kind event happening here on our shores. This event is an international sand sculpting festival, bringing artists from around the world to make stunning creations out of nothing more than the sand on the beach.
The Siesta Key Crystal Classic has been a staple event of the area since it began in 2010. Brian Wigelsworth, a Siesta Key resident and master sand sculptor, suggested bringing the event to Siesta Key to mimic similar events in locations like Texas, Virginia, and Washington. Master sculptors spend the year competing in events like these before moving on to the Master Competitions.
The main attraction here is the international competition, pitting 24 artists against one another for the ultimate sand creation. But that’s not all that’s going on over these few days! You can take sand sculpting lessons and watch demonstrations, participate in the Quick Sand contest, or try your hand at the Amateur Competition happening on Saturday.
On top of all that, you’ll enjoy the amazing Vendor Village. Right outside of Sand Village where all the professionals’ sculptures are located, you’ll find Vendor Village, hosting over 80 vendors with everything from clothing and jewelry to unique handmade goods and souvenirs. There are also half a dozen food trucks on site to keep your hunger at bay while you watch the competition unfold.
Last but certainly not least, don’t miss the Barefoot Beach Party Tent. It’ll be open every day of the event and offers live music and a full bar with no entry fee! Catch local musical acts like Kettle of Fish, Fleetwood Max, Chris Otto & The Melody Miners, Out of the Blue SRQ, and many others. This weekend-long event will prove to be an experience you won’t soon forget!
This event will be going on from November 11 to 14, 2022.
Who can participate?
The main competition consists of international professionals that have already been hand-picked to attend and compete. But if you’ve got a creative flare and want to get in on the action, you’re in luck! Consider registering for Saturday’s Amateur Competition.
This competition is split into five categories based on age and team number. “Hatchlings” is for one or two children under ten years of age. “Loggerheads” is for slightly older kids aged 11-17, with one or two kids per sculpture.
For groups, the “Turtle Bale Youth” category allows up to five kids (aged 10-17) to team up on one sculpture. There’s also a standard “Turtle Bale” category for groups of up to five adults per team. Finally, the “Solo Leatherbacks” category is for individuals aged 18 or older.
If you want to participate, you’ll need to register beforehand by visiting the Siesta Key Crystal Classic website. Be sure to register by November 8! Hatchlings will have from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to complete their sculptures, while all other groups will have from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Before you start developing your creation, there are a few basic rules to keep in mind. You must bring your own tools with you (no power tools, though), and you must keep your sculpture within the bounds of the plot you’ve been assigned. No rowdiness, no coloring or additives in the sand, and no umbrellas near the sculptures.

Where can I spectate?
Even if you don’t want to build your own sand sculpture, you can still have tons of fun as a spectator! Bring the whole family to cheer on the artists and determine which sculpture you think will win the grand prize.
As one of the most popular Siesta Key events, it only makes sense that this competition would take place on Siesta Beach itself. When you arrive, you’ll find public parking offered for free on a first-come, first-served basis. You also have the opportunity to reserve a parking space in advance for a small fee (note that your parking space will only be valid for the Friday and Monday events).
You don’t want to fight for a parking spot when you’re trying to get to and from the event each day. Instead, you can opt to leave your car safely in the driveway of your Siesta Key vacation rental and hop on the island’s trolley! The trolley is an entirely free service that runs daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The route travels from Siesta Key Village to Turtle Beach.
