About Nathan Benderson Park
Nathan Benderson Park spans a whopping 600 acres and includes a breathtaking 400-acre lake, creating a picturesque destination you have to see to believe. Guests can come here to enjoy a simple day in the sunshine, rent water sports equipment, attend events, and more. Nathan Benderson Park is a popular spot for visitors and residents alike to hang out, offering plenty to see and do at little to no cost for guests.
From April 1 to October 31, Nathan Benderson Park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Things to Do by Land
If you want to stay on dry land, you can find plenty to do at Nathan Benderson Park. To begin, there are some beautiful trails throughout the park, ideal for walking, running, cycling, or skating. You can take the trails at your own pace (perhaps stopping to watch some birds along the way!) or try to set a new personal record for the mile!
If it’s wildlife you’re interested in, then Nathan Benderson Park is the place to be. You can see dozens of bird species in and around the park, including varieties like the American White Pelican, Lesser Scaup, Sandhill Crane, and Glossy Ibis. The western section of the park holds a partially shaded walking trail where herons and waders often gather.
Nathan Benderson Park is also holding fun programs all year long, many of which are designed to help you get active and have fun simultaneously. Lately, guests have been loving group activities like Yoga in the Park and Zumba.
Things to Do by Water
On a hot summer day, Nathan Benderson Park presents a great place to cool off in the water. Guests of all ages and skill levels can come to enjoy the waves. For instance, if you want to learn a new skill, try the Learn to Row 101: Introduction to Sculling class! You’ll learn all the basics of sculling (rowing with two oars) and leave the course with a brand-new skill to show off. All equipment is included, and you’ll get a Certificate of Completion when you’re through.
There’s no more apparent water-based activity than fishing, and Nathan Benderson Park is a great place to do it. You’ll find several different freshwater species like blue gill, bass, and crappie. Be sure to get your fishing license before you hit the water! Boat ramps can be found near the south entrance of the park, but note that no gas motors are allowed on the waters here.
Upcoming Projects
Nathan Benderson Park is already a popular destination, but it’s not done growing yet. Sarasota County has recently announced plans to expand Nathan Benderson Park with a brand-new sports complex and boathouse! This project will cost an estimated $40 million, half of which is coming from the county’s slightly increased bed tax. You can feel good knowing that the money you spend on your vacation goes toward great community improvements like this one!
Plans for these new developments are still in the works, but there are a few things we know so far. It’s believed that the sports complex will be at least 100,000 square feet and will hold eight full-sized basketball courts, which can also be converted to suit sports like volleyball or pickleball. The facility may also have a concession stand/café bar as well as other multipurpose rooms.
